Victor Ortiz lost his WBC welterweight title by KO at 2:59 of round four to Floyd Mayweather Jr (42-0-0, 26 KOs) in the most bizarre ending on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ortiz headbutted Mayweather at 2:50 of round four prompting referee Joe Cortez to stop the fight and penalize Ortiz one point. After bringing Ortiz back to the center of the ring after the break Ortiz approached Mayweather to hug him and apologize for headbutting him but instead he got sucker punched and knocked out by Mayweather. Ortiz did not realize that the break was over and that the fight was back on because referee Joe Cortez had his back to the fighters as he signalled the time keeper to restart the clock and he never looked at the fighters and said "box on". It was a poor job of refereeing and communicating by Joe Cortez and an underhanded blow by Mayweather but Ortiz should of had his guard up and been ready to protect himself at all times.
