The Tropicana Casino opened on November 23, 1981 built on the former site of the Ambassador Hotel. The first fight card held at the Tropicana Atlantic City was on January 26, 1982. Since then boxing promoters such as Don Elbaum, Bob Arum, Cedric Kushner, Russell Peltz, Alfredo Marchio, Diane Lee Fischer, Joe DeGuardia and Dino Duva promoted almost two hundred fights at the Tropicana Casino. Many of the bouts were televised on ESPN and Fox.
During the banner years in the early 80s Don Elbaum promoted a boxing show every week at the Tropicana. That number continually dwindled over the last twenty-six years for a variety of reasons until there were only a couple of fights a year. Recently with the turnout for Kelly Pavlik's fights boxing in Atlantic City is making a comeback. Additionally MMA fans have packed the house to the rafters as the casino adds mixed martial arts fights featuring up and coming MMA talent to the Tropicana schedule.
