The Contender

The Contender 1 Season boxing reality TV series ran on NBC for 15-episodes through 2005. It took 16 middleweight boxers and followed their lives as trained and competed for a $1 million prize. The winner of The Contender 1 Finale was Sergio Mora from Los Angeles, California who beat Peter Manfredo Jr by unanimous decision at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 24, 2005. Mora won $1 million. Peter Manfredo Jr had previously beaten Contender fan favorite Alfonso Gomez in the semi-finals.

The Contender 2 Season took 16 welterweights and followed their lives as they competed for a $500,000 purse and The Contender belt. Each episode ended with a 5 round fight held in Pasadena, California at The Contender Gymnasium. The winner stayed, and the loser went home leaving only 2 fighters out of 16 to fight in The Contender 2 Finale held at the Staples Center in LA on September 26, 2006. Journeyman Grady Brewer won defeating former world champion Steve Forbes by a split decision. Brewer won $500,000.

The Contender 3 Season featured a new weight class, new trainers and a bigger purse. Season 3 moved up a weight class to super middleweight (over 160 to 168 lbs). The trainers were world class trainer Buddy McGirt and celebrated trainer Pepe Correa. The purse was raised up from season 2 to $750,000 for the winner.

The Contender 3 Season came to an end with two Contender finalists, Jaidon Codrington and Sakio Bika going toe-to-toe for 10 rounds vying for The Contender Championship belt and a $750,000 purse. In a fight reminiscent of Ward-Gatti each fighter gave 110%. Both were dropped in round one only to come back fighting round after round with furious intensity. Referee Dick Flaherty stopped the fight at 2:18 of round eight with Codrington reeling against the ropes as Bika pummeled him. Bika won $750,000.
