Serguei Lyakhovich beat Lamon Brewster by unanimous decision on April 1, 2006 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was one of the best slug fests of the year. Brewster not only lost his WBO heavyweight title during the fight but also the sight in his left eye after the first round due to a jab thrown by Lyakhovich that caught Brewster directly in the eye. It was later confirmed that Brewster had suffered a detached retina and underwent surgical repair. The Serguei Lyakhovich vs Lamon Brewster fight won the WBO 2006 Fight of the Year award.

The second time Lyakhovich was knocked out of the ring landing on top of the scorers table just like Hasim Rahman was when Oleg Maskaev knocked him out of the ring. Lyakhovich tried to right himself and get back into the ring but the referee looked at him and waved the fight off. Shannon Briggs won the fight with 1 second left to go.
