Sergei Liakhovich, fighting for the first time in 15 months lost by 9th round TKO in a WBA/WBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title fight to Robert Helenius (16-0-0, 11 KOs) on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Messehalle in Erfurt, Thuringen, Germany. Liakhovich suffered a broken nose in round two which bled profusely and severly hampered his breathing. Liakhovich took a knee in round eight and was staggered and rendered defenseless by a barrage of punches in round nine. Referee Stanley Christodoulou stopped the fight at 0:19 of round nine as Liakhovich was falling to the canvas. Post fight examination revealed Liakhovich's nose was broken in two places and will require surgery.

Sergei Liakhovich beat Lamon Brewster by unanimous decision on April 1, 2006 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was one of the best slug fests of the year. Brewster not only lost his WBO heavyweight title during the fight but also the sight in his left eye after the first round due to a jab thrown by Liakhovich that caught Brewster directly in the eye. It was later confirmed that Brewster had suffered a detached retina and underwent surgical repair. The Liakhovich vs Brewster fight won the WBO 2006 Fight of the Year award.

On November 4, 2006 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, Sergei Liakhovich lost to Shannon Briggs by a 12th round TKO. Liakhovich was down twice in the 12th round. The second time Liakhovich was knocked out of the ring landing on top of the scorers table just like Hasim Rahman was when Oleg Maskaev knocked him out of the ring. Liakhovich tried to right himself and get back into the ring but the referee looked at him and waved the fight off. Shannon Briggs won the fight with 1 second left to go.

Liakhovich lost a 12-round unanimous decision bout on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Nuernberg Arena in Nuremberg, Germany to Nikolay Valuev who weighted 70 pounds more and stood 8 inches taller. Liakhovich was coming off a dramatic 12th round TKO lost to Shannon Briggs on November 4, 2006 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. Liakhovich's world title fight was on the same day in the same stadium and city as the Arizona Diamondbacks won the World Series against the Yankees. But it did not bring good luck for Arizona resident Belarussian Sergei Liakhovich.
