Sergio Martinez beat previously undefeated EBU middleweight champion Darren Barker (23-1-0, 14 KOs) by KO at 1:29 of round eleven on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It wasn't one of Martinez's best fights. Barker, the more accurate puncher fought behind a high guard and closed the distance making it hard for Martinez to counter punch. Finally in round ten Martinez hurt Barker with a right hook. Then in round eleven Martinez put Barker down on the canvas with a right. Barker tried to get up on his feet by the count of ten but failed. Martinez retained his WBC Diamond middleweight title.

Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez
Sergio Gabriel Martinez fought to a majority draw against Kermit Cintron (30-2-0, 27 KOs) in an interim WBC light middleweight title fight on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. There was confusion in round seven, Cintron was down from a punch and was not completely up off the canvas when the referee counted 10. Cintron protested that he was down from a clash of heads instead. A Florida boxing commission official entered the ring and after a couple of minutes the fight was resumed. Then in round twelve Martinez lost a point for cuffing Cintron on the back of the head. Scores were 113-113, 113-113 and 116-110.

Martinez lost to Paul Williams (39-1-0, 27 KOs) by 12-round majority decision in a middleweight non-title fight on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Scores were 110-119, 113-115 and 114-114. Both fighters scored knockdowns in round one. A majority of those ringside felt Martinez had won the fight.
Sergio Martinez beat former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (36-2-0, 32 KOs) by unanimous decision in a WBC & WBO middleweight title fight on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Scores were 116-111, 115-111 and 115-112. In addition to his victory Martinez won Pavlik's WBC and WBO middleweight titles. It had been over 40 years that an Argentinian fighter had won a middleweight title. Pavlik vs Martinez was part of a two site double header televised live on HBO along with Bute vs Miranda which took place in Canada.
WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez knocked out Paul Williams (39-2-0, 27 KOs) at 1:10 of round two in a rematch on Saturday, November 20, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Martinez caught Williams on the chin with a left that had Williams out before he hit the canvas face first and was counted out. Definately a candidate for knockout of the year. A sensational knockout! Martinez vs Williams II was contested at a catchweight of 158 pounds for Martinez's WBC middleweight title.
Martinez vs Dzinziruk
Martinez defeated Ukrainian Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-1-0, 23 KOs) by 8th round TKO on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Martinez knocked down Dzinziruk five times in the fight, once in rounds four and six and twice in round eight. Dzinziruk, the reigning WBO light middleweight champion since 2005 moved up to middleweight for the fight. The WBC stripped Martinez of his WBC middleweight title for taking the Dzinziruk fight that HBO wanted. Martinez vs Dzinziruk was contested for the vacant WBC Diamond middleweight title.
