Rey Bautista lost in an upset to Heriberto Ruiz (40-7-2, 23 KOs) by 8-round unanimous decision on Saturday, November 22, 2008 fighting on the Hatton-Malignaggi undercard at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Scores read 70-80, 72-78 and 73-77. It was a bad night for Bautista who was knocked down in round three, suffered a deep cut over his right eye from a headbutt and lost a point for low blows in round seven in the fight which supposed to be turn up for a title fight.

Rey Bautista is promoted by Golden Boys and trained by Freddy Roach of Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, California. Bautista, already a mega star in the Phillipines is being touted as the next Manny Pacquiao.
On December 2, 2006 at St Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Bautista dominated Giovanni Andrade winning the fight by 4th round TKO after Andrade's corner threw in the towel.

The Bohol slugger was previously undefeated, coming off a sensational 12-round unanimous decision win over Sergio Manuel Medina on the undercard of the De La Hoya-Mayweather fight May 5, 2007. Unfortunately Bautista got wobbled when he got caught with a hard left from Ponce De Leon and suffered his first career loss. The 2007 World Cup of Boxing ended up 1 Mexico, 5 Philipines.
