Rafael Marquez
Rafael Marquez, brother of former world featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez. Rafael Marquez and Juan Manuel Marquez are one of only four sets of Mexican brothers in history to win world titles. Rafael Marquez has held the IBF bantamweight title since 2003 successfully defending it 7 times. Rafael Marquez along with his brother are trained by Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain who is considered to be Mexico's top boxing trainer.
Rafael Marquez is a puncher with heavy hands and has the ability to turn his opponents lights out. He has a wicked left hand and a powerful straight right as well as being able to throw very effective combinations. Rafael Marquez's notable fights in recent years include his 2005 win over Silence Mabuza by a 4th round TKO and his 2006 victorious rematch with Mabuza when Mabuza's corner stopped the fight after the 9th round.
Marquez, having moved up in weight to the 122 lb division dethroned WBC super bantamweight champion Israel Vazquez by a 7th round TKO on March 03, 2007. Marquez was down in round three from a left hook. A true Mexican warrior who loves to trade leather Marquez got up and continued brutal two way action with Vazquez thru round seven when Vazquez retired on his stool due to a broken nose.
Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Dodge Arena in in Hidalgo, Texas, Marquez lost his bout by TKO with Israel Vazquez at 1:16 of the 6th round when referee Guadalupe Garcia stopped the fight. Marquez appeared to be in bad shape after being knocked down by Vazquez. Having not lost a fight since November 2000, Marquez complained it was an early stoppage.
Marquez lost his rematch with Israel Vazquez by a 12-round split decision on Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the Home Depo Center in Carson, California. In a fight that was as furious as their first two meetings the two Mexicans traded power punches for 12 hellacious rounds with the tides turning. Marquez dropped Vazquez in the 4th round but as he was trying to finish him off it was Vazquez who almost finished Marquez. Although Marquez won the early rounds Vazquez worked himself back into the fight winning the later rounds and came out blasting in the 12th round almost winning the fight by KO hurting Marquez badly in the final seconds of the round.
Marquez protested the decision citing the point deduction for a low blow in round ten should not have happened (Marquez threw numerous low blows during the fight and was given several warnings prior to the point deduction.) and that he was not holding the ropes in the final seconds of the rounds to hold himself up from going down so he should not have been given a standing eight count. Smells like the makings of a 4th fight.
Marquez beat Columbian Jose Francisco Mendoza (21-3-2, 17 KOs) by 3rd round TKO on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico. It had been almost 15 months since Marquez had fought Israel Vazquez in the last fight of their epic trilogy. Marquez shook off the ring rust and landed a couple of overhead rights in round three that dazed then floored Mendoza prompting the referee to stop the fight.
