Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi

(27-3-0, 5 KOs)

Paulie Malignaggi from Brooklyn entered pro boxing as an amateur champion having won the 1998 and 2001 New York Golden Gloves Amateur Championship, 2001 United States National Amateur Championship and Everlast US Championships. In his professional boxing debut Paulie knocked out Thadeus Parker in Brooklyn in the first 27 seconds of round one. Malignaggi is a quick fighter but his punching power is not that great, only KOing 6 of his opponents. Malignaggi has suffered a broken right hand twice undergoing a couple of surgeries which can spell doom for a young boxer but yet Paulie has been able to bounce right back.

On June 10, 2006 Malignaggi, the trash talking Sicilian lost to Miguel Angel Cotto by 12-round UD. Malignaggi suffered a cut over his left eye, a broken a bone in his cheek and was bleeding from his nose and mouth yet he refused to surrender. You gotta respect Malignaggi for the heart, guts and determination he showed during the bout.

Malignaggi came off his brutal loss to Miguel Cotto winning a 10-round unanimous decision by shutout against lightweight contender Edner Cherry on February 17, 2007. Malignaggi controlled the fight with his left jab, quick footwork and ring generalship not letting Cherry land any clean punches.

On Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, Malignaggi won a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision over Lovemore Ndou capturing the IBF light welterweight title that Ndou was awarded after Ricky Hatton vacated it to fight Jose Luis Castillo instead of Ndou who was the mandatory challanger. Malignaggi was able to control the fight with his left jab and actually scored a knockdown dropping Ndou in the 9th round with a quick right.

Malignaggi successfully defended his IBF light welterweight title beating Herman Ngoudjo (16-2-0, 9 KOs) in a close 12-round unanimous decision victory on Saturday, January 5, 2008 at Ballys in Atlantic City. Ngoudjo's aggressiveness frequently had Malignaggi backpeddling and his back against the ropes. He cut Malignaggi over the left eye in round four, beat him up and rocked him in round seven but Malignaggi did enough to retain his belt.

Paulie Malignaggi managed to win a split decision victory in a rematch with Lovemore N'dou (46-10-1, 31 KOs) despite a hair disaster and supposed hand injury on May 24, 2008 at the City of Manchester Stadium in the UK. The judges scored Malignaggi's second IBF light welterweight title defense 114-115, 116-112 and 116-113. Boxing with unruly hair extensions Malignaggi needed a hair stylist in his corner along with his cutman. The fight was stopped in mid-action for an unsuccessful hair redo that resulted in a haircut between rounds which probably was a first in boxing history.

Malignaggi lost to Ricky Hatton (45-1-0, 32 KOs) by 11th round TKO on Saturday, November 22, 2008 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Having seen their fighter get hit and hurt repeatedly and not doing much other than grabbing and holding Malignaggi's corner threw in the towel at 0:48 of round 11. There was no chance of Malignaggi winning, he had lost every round but one according to the judges scorecards and a win by knockout with Malignaggi's 18% KO rate was not fathomable. In addition to losing this IBO light welterweight title fight Malignaggi is also titleless now after choosing to vacate his IBF light welterweight title to fight Ricky Hatton rather than granting mandatory challenger Hermann Ngoudjoa a rematch.

Malignaggi fighting on the Froch vs Taylor undercard beat Christopher Fernandez (16-7-1, 9 KOs) of Salt Lake City, Utah by 8-round unanimous decision on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Scores were 79-73, 79-73 and 79-73 all for Malignaggi. Fernandez rocked Malignaggi in the 6th round but Malignaggi recovered during the break between rounds.

Malignaggi lost to Juan Diaz (35-2-0, 17 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Scores were 110-118, 112-116 and 113-115. Malignaggi felt that he had won the fight and complained that he was a victim of a hometown decision and boxing politics. Despite the score of 118-110 for Diaz by Texan judge Gale Van Hoy many felt the fight was close and could have been a draw or gone either way. Malignaggi boxed well, had speed, kept his jab pumping and used his legs effectively but lack of punching power is his nemesis.

Malignaggi won his rematch with Juan Diaz (35-3-0, 17 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision and Diaz's NABO Light Welterweight alphabetic belt on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. Scores were 116-111, 116-111 and 116-111. Malignaggi used his feet and every inch of the 20 sq ft ring to keep Diaz from getting inside to land his heavier punches. The referee erroneously credited Malignaggi with a knockdown in round ten when he cuffed Diaz to the back of head and threw him down to the canvas. Malignaggi showboated too much taking away from his performance.
