Paul "The Punisher" Williams
Paul Williams is a tall, lanky southpaw who is a busy fighter. To some that's a dangerous combination. At 6 feet 2 inches tall with an 82 inch reach Williams has a height and reach advantage over most guys he is fighting now since he has dropped down to welterweight after fighting 29 of his 33 fights in the light middleweight and middleweight divisions. Williams, who has fast hands and a high punch output also fights from a southpaw stance so his punches are coming from an unexpected place and from an unusual angle than what boxers are trained to expect. It's troublesome and awkward to defend yourself against a lanky southpaw, especially one that's a good boxer.
Williams Interview On Margarito Fight
Williams beat Antonio Margarito on Saturday, July 14, 2007 in Carson, California at the Home Depot Center capturing his WBO welterweight title by a 12-round unanimous decision. For the first 6 rounds Williams kept Margarito on the outside by throwing non-stop pitty-pat punches from all angles. Margarito blocked most of them and those that got through had no effect on Margarito since they were just slaps and cuffs but never the less Williams was racking up points on the judges scorecards by being the busier fighter. Margarito, throwing heavy, damaging punches battered and buzzed Williams in the 10th and 11th rounds cutting Williams left eye in the process but Williams managed to weather the storm and pull off an upset.
Paul Williams got punished by Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana (25-1-0, 19 KOs) losing his first WBO welterweight title defense by way of a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at Pechanga Casino in Temecula, California. The judges score cards read 112-116, 112-116 and 113-115. Williams was touted by his handlers as the most feared man in boxing. A boxer most fighters wanted to avoid. Carlos Quintana, a southpaw himself had no problem overcoming Williams 5 inch height and 10 inch reach advantage or the fact that Williams entered the ring at 164 lbs which is three weight classes heavier than welterweight.
Williams having lost his belt in his first title defense to Puerto Rican Carlos Quintana on February 9, 2008 immediately asked for a rematch which took place on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. Williams (34-1-0, 25 KOs) avenged his loss beating Quintana (25-2-0, 19 KOs) by 1st round TKO at 2:15 regaining his WBO welterweight belt. Quintana-Williams II was part of a doubleheader with Forrest-Mora aired live on Showtime.
On Thursday, September 25, 2008 at the Soboba Casino in San Jacinto, California, Paul Williams beat Andy Kolle (17-2-0, 12 KOs) by TKO at 1:37 of round one. Williams fighting at middleweight downed southpaw Kolle from Fergus Falls, Minnesota with a big right.
Paul Williams beat light middleweight champion Verno Phillips (42-11-1, 21 KOs) by 8th round TKO on Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California capturing the interim WBO light middleweight title. Williams right jabs and body shots punished Phillips causing the ring doctor to recommend that the fight be stopped after examining Phillips at the end of round eight. Phillips had not been stopped since 1988.
On Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, Paul Williams beat Winky Wright (51-5-1, 25 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision . Williams high punch output, long reach and awkward style gave Wright problems. Scores were 120-108, 119-109 and 119-109. The fight took place at 160 lbs which is the upper limit of middleweight.
Williams defeated WBC light middleweight champion Argentinian Sergio Martinez (44-2-2, 24 KOs) by 12-round majority decision in a middleweight fight on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The judges scores were 114-114, 119-110 and 115-113. How Judge Pierre Benoist of New Jersey scored the fight 119-110 for Williams is beyond belief. The guy is either crooked or inept. Many ringside felt that Martinez won the fight. Both fighters scored knockdowns in the first round with Martinez's being the most resounding. The co-feature saw Chris Arreola brutally knockout Brian Minto in the 4th round.
Paul Williams won by a controversial if not ridiculous 4th round split decision over Kermit Cintron (32-3-1, 28 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round light middleweight fight on Saturday, May 8, 2010 at Home Depot in Carson, California. The bout was ended early when Williams clinched Cintron and fell to the canvas. Cintron tripped over Williams and fell headfirst out of the ring hitting the edge of the ring, ringside table and monitor before landing on the floor. The ringside doctor would not allow Cintron to continue fighting and Cintron was taken out on a stretcher to the hospital.
California rules allow a TECHNICAL DECISION to be rendered as long as the 4th round has begun. The Association of Boxing Commissions Unified Rules declare the bout a NO DECISION if it is stopped before four rounds have been completed. The judges scored the fight 40-36 and 39-37 for Williams and 40-36 for Cintron. With the 4th round only lasting 30 seconds and hardly any action occuring the judges should have scored the round even. God only knows how two of the judges had Williams winning the fight when it was obvious that Cintron was winning. Williams vs Cintron headlined the HBO fight card promoted by Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor and Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment.
Paul Williams lost by 2nd round KO to Argentinian Sergio Martinez (46-2-2, 25 KOs) in a WBC middleweight title fight on Saturday, November 20, 2010 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. It was the first time Williams lost by knockout. Caught with a left to the chin Williams was out before he hit the canvas. The fight was at a catchweight 158 lb for Martinez's WBC middleweight belt that he won by beating Kelly Pavlik by 12-round unanimous decision on April 17, 2010. Williams and Martinez had previously fought each other on December 5, 2009 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey with Williams winning by majority decision. This time Williams ended up face first on the canvas losing by knockout.
Paul Williams won by an incredibly bad 12-round majority decision over Erislandy Lara (15-1-1, 10 KOs) on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Incompetent judges scored the fight 114-114, 116-114 and 115-114 for Williams. The crowd booed the decision. Ringside announcers and press row all had Lara winning. Throughout the fight Williams was repeatedly hit by overhand lefts, the same shot that Sergio Martinez KO'd him with, and power shots that buckled his knees and turned his face into a bloody mess. Note: After a video review of the fight commissioner Aaron Davis and the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board placed all three judges, Hilton Whitaker, Don Givens and Al Bennett on indefinite suspension. Furthermore requiring them to undergo further training before being allowed to return as professional boxing judges.
