Nate Campbell, a 4-1 underdog in an upset beat Juan Diaz (33-1-0, 17 KOs) by 12-round split decision in a very close fight on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Scores were 116-115 and 115-112 for Campbell and 114-113 for Diaz. In addition to his victory Campbell captured Juan Diaz's IBF, WBA and WBO Lightweight titles becoming the new unified champion.
Campbell had a point deducted by the referee in round six from an alleged headbutt that opened up a cut over Juan Diaz's left eye. Close up replays showed the cut came from a short left not a headbutt.

Campbell beat South African challenger Ali Funeka (30-2-2, 25 KOs) by majority decision in a 12-round IBF/WBA/WBO Lightweight Title fight at the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday, February 14, 2009 on HBO. Campbell dropped Funeka in rounds two and eleven. Scores were 115-111, 114-112 and 113-113. Campbell lost to WBO Junior Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley (25-0-0, 12 KOs) by 3rd round TKO on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California. There was a clash of heads in the midst of an exchange that Campbell said caused a cut over his left eye and left him seeing spots. The referee disagreed saying that the blood in Campbell's eye was from a punch that came before the headbutt. Subsequently on August 24, 2009 the CSAC subsequently overturned the technical knockout loss to a no-contest. The Bradley-Campbell fightcard promoted by Gary Shaw, Ken Thompson and Don King was televised live on Showtime.
