Monte Barrett defeated New Zealander David Tua (52-4-2, 43 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision in a rematch on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Telstra Clear Events Centre in Manukau City, New Zealand. Scores were 115-112, 115-112 and 114-113. Tua knocked down Barrett with a combination of punches in the last minute of round twelve. Barrett beat the count, hung on and managed to survive to the final bell. Tua vs Barrett II was contested for the WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental heavyweight titles.

The two fighters previously fought to a draw on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at the Tropicana Showroom in Atlantic City, New Jersey in a WBO Asia Pacific and WBO Oriental heavyweight title fight. In that bout Barrett knocked down Tua in round twelve. It was the first time that Tua had been down in his pro career. Scores were 113-113, 113-113 and 115-111 for Tua resulting in a majority draw. Tua was coming off a 12-round unanimous decision over Friday Ahunanya and a spectacular 2nd round knockout win over Shane Cameron.

Monte "Two Gunz" Barrett

Monte Barrett, heavyweight contender from Queens was lost to the undefeated Joe Mesi by majority decision in a see-saw battle on December 6, 2003 at Madison Square Garden in New York. In 2004 Barrett beat undefeated Dominick Guinn by split decision. In 2005 Barrett went on to beat undefeated Owen Beck by a 9th round TKO.

These wins lined up Barrett for his title shot against lifelong friend Hasim Rahman after reigning champion Vitali Klitschko was forced to cancel his defense against Rahman due to a knee injury. Rahman beat Barrett by a 12 round unanimous decision in the WBC heavyweight interim title fight.

On October 7, 2006 Monte Barrett wasn't able to neutralize the height and weight advantage of the acromegaloid Nikolay Valuev. Barrett, 6'3", 222lb was dwarfed by 7'2", 328lb Valuez. Barrett's trainer jumped into the ring during round eleven to save his fighter from further assault calling a halt to the bout.

Monte Barrett totally exposed 6' 8" and 265lb Tye Fields (41-2-0, 37 KOs) knocking him out at 57 seconds in round one on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Barrett sent Fields head bouncing off the canvas.

Barrett has been on a knockout streak lately having knocked out Damon Reed (43-13-0, 30 KOs) in round two on February 2, 2008 in Scottsdale, Arizona. And on December 6, 2007 Cliff Couser in round two at the Paradise Theater in the Bronx avenging his 2nd round knockout loss to Couser on July 7, 2007.

On Saturday, November 15, 2008 at O2 Arena in London, Monte Barrett lost to David Haye (22-1-0, 20 KOs) by 5th round TKO in a WBC Heavyweight Title Eliminator fight. From round three on the fight was a slugfest. Barrett was knocked down twice in round three and round four before being downed for a final time in round five. Prior to being knocked down in round five Barrett put Haye down with a good shot but then lost a point for hitting him when he was down on the canvas.

Barrett, who was a late replacement for Fres Oquendo lost to 2004 Cuban Olympic Gold Heavyweight Medalist Odlanier Solis (15-0-0, 11 KOs) by 2nd round TKO in a WBC International heavyweight title fight on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Solis dropped Barrett with a big left hook to the chin in round two but Barrett beat the count only to get up and get knocked down again. Solis vs Barrett took place on the undercard of Latin Fury 12 promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank, Ahmet Oener of Arena Box-Promotion and Ivan Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing co-featuring Juan Manuel "Juanma" Lopez vs Rogers Mtagwa and Yuriorkis Gamboa vs Whyber Garcia.
