Miguel Angel Cotto represented Puerto Rico as a light welterweight at 2000 Sydney Olympics. Cotto's most notable fight recently was on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at Madison Square Garden in New York where he beat Paulie Malignaggi by a 12 round UD. Malignaggi was down in round two. Cotto won the WBO light welterweight belt.

Cotto demolished previously undefeated Carlos Quintana on Saturday, December 2, 2006 in a fight for the vacant WBA welterweight title at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Quintana retired on his stool after the 5th round where he was knocked down twice. Steve Smoger refereed the fight. Scores through the 5th round were 48-45, 48-45 and 48-45. This was Cotto's welterweight debut and at 147 lb Cotto was powerful.

On Saturday, March 3, 2007 at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto, beat Oktay Urkal by 11th round TKO after Urkal's trainer Ulli Wegner threw in the towel citing unfair judging. Urkal lost two points for repeated headbutting in rounds 7 and 11. Cotto also suffered a cut over his left eye from a headbutt in round 5. At the time of stoppage Cotto was ahead on all judges score cards.

On Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Miguel Cotto beat former three division world champion Shane Mosley by a 12-round unanimous decision retaining his WBA welterweight title. Scores were 115-113, 115-113, 116-113. CompuBox had both fighters landing the same number of punches; Cotto 248 of 675 (37%) and Mosley 248 of 774 (32%).

Miguel Cotto hammered and beat outmatched former Contender contestant Alfonso Gomez (18-4-2, 8 KOs) by 6th round RTD on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The uncompetitive fight took place on HBO's doubleheader along with the Kermit Cintron vs Antonio Margarito rematch. Cotto, remains undefeated having successfully defended his WBA welterweight title four times since winning the vacant title in a bout against Carlos Quintana in December 2006. His win over Gomez along with Margarito's win over Cintron sets up a WBA & IBF welterweight title fight between Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

Miguel Cotto lost to Mexican Antonio Margarito by 11th round TKO at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, July 26, 2008. Cotto's corner threw in the towel at 2:05 of round eleven as Cotto went down on his knee for the second in the round. Along with suffering his first professional defeat Cotto lost his WBA welterweight title to Margarito.

On Saturday, February 21, 2009 in front of 11,120 fans at Madison Square Garden in New York with a live gate of almost $1 million, Miguel Cotto beat Michael Jennings (33-2-0, 16 KOs) from Lancashire, UK by 5th round TKO . In addition to his victory Cotto won the WBO Welterweight Title. Cotto downed Jennings twice in the 4th round and a third time in the 5th before referee Benjy Esteves had seen enough and stopped the fight at 2:38. The Cotto vs Jennings fight took place as part of a two site double header promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank along with Pavlik vs Rubio at the Chevrolet Centre in Youngstown, Ohio.

Miguel Cotto beat Ghanaian challenger Joshua Clottey (35-3-0, 20 KOs) by 12-round split decision on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Madison Square Garden in New York on the eve of the annual Puerto Rican Day parade. Cotto scored a knockdown of Clottey at the end of round one. The judges scores were 116-111 and 115-112 for Cotto and 114-113 for Clottey. In addition to his victory Cotto retained his WBO Welterweight Title. Both fighters fought through injuries suffered during the bout. Cotto a cut over his left eye from an accidental headbutt in round three and Clottey a knee injury when Cotto threw him down in the corner in round five.

Miguel Cotto lost by 12th round TKO to the new WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KOs) on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Cotto was down in rounds three and four and not the same after the second knockdown. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight at 0:55 of round twelve with Cotto in survival mode and a bloody mess.

Miguel Cotto beat previously undefeated Yuri Foreman (28-1-0, 8 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York by 9th round TKO on Saturday, June 5, 2010 before 20,272 fans at Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York. The bout was waved off at 0:42 of round nine after Cotto dropped Foreman with a left body shot. The fight was not without controversy or confusion though. Foreman injured his right knee in round seven and his corner fearing for his safety because he was working with only one good leg threw in the towel in round eight during a heated exchange. Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. angrily threw it back out after Foreman acknowledged he wanted to continue. In addition to his victory Miguel Cotto captured Foreman's WBA light middleweight title.
