Michael Katsidis lost by 12-round unanimous decision to Ricky Burns (33-2-0, 9 KOs) of Scotland in an interim WBO lightweight title fight on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Wembley Arena in London. Scores were 112-117, 111-117 and 111-117. Burns outboxed Katsidis who aggressively stalked Burns throughout the bout. Katsidis has now lost three of his last four fights.

Michael Katsidis in Greek helmet of war.Michael Katsidis, an Australian boxer of Greek heritage proudly enters the ring wearing his trademark Greek helmet of war which as earned him the nickname "Katsidis the Great".

Michael Katsidis had an impressive amateur boxing career winning 75 of 81 fights before turning pro. In addition he was fought as a lightweight on the 2000 Australian Olympic boxing team in Sydney making it to the semifinals.

On December 1, 2001 in his professional debut Katsidis won the Queensland State lightweight title. Since then he has won the Australian lightweight, Australian light welterweight, IBF Pan Pacific lightweight, WBO Asia Pacific lightweight and interim WBO lightweight titles.

One of Katsidis' most notable fights was with Graham Earl in the UK on February 17, 2007 at the Arena in Wembley. Katsidis won the WBO lightweight interim title by a 5th round RTD when Earl's corner stops the fight between the 5th and 6th rounds due to cut over Earl's eye.

Michael Katsidis came to the US with a reputation as an all action boxer, promising to show American boxing fans new blood. Fighting on the Hopkins-Wright undercard on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada, Katsidis lived up to his reputation and kept his promise. His bout with Filipino Czar Amonsot turned out to be a bloody, bruising battle proving Katsidis to be a barnburner of a fighter! In an all out war Katsidis beat Amonsot by a 12-round unanimous decision. Katsidis' left eye was swollen shut and his face bloodied from facial and eye cuts that required 26 stitches. Amonsot suffered a subdural hematoma.

On Saturday, March 22, 2008 at the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, California, Michael Katsidis who was previously undefeated and the WBO lightweight interim champion was beaten by Joel Casamayor by 10th round TKO. In the opening minute of round one Katsidis was dropped twice by Joel Casamayor. By round four Katsidis turned the fight around and in round six knocked Casamayor out of the ring. In round ten Katsidis was dropped hard by a Casamayor left hook. Moments later referee Jon Schorle stopped the bout. At the time of stoppage Katsidis led 84-83 on two judge's scorecards through round nine.

Katsidis lost to Juan Diaz (34-1-0, 17 KOs) by 12-round split decision in Diaz's hometown of Houston, Texas on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at the Toyota Center. The bout aired live on HBO Boxing After Dark. The judge's scores were 115-113 for Katsidis and 116-112 and 115-113 for Diaz.

On Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Cebu Coliseum in Cebu City, Philippines, Michael Katsidis fought and beat Angel Hugo Ramirez (19-5-2, 8 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decison capturing the vacant WBO Asia Pacific lightweight title. Scores were 98-87, 96-89 and 96-89.

Michael Katsidis beat former super featherweight and lightweight champion Jesus Chavez (44-5-0, 30 KOs) by 7th round RTD on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas. Fighting on the Valero vs Pitalua undercard promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, Katsidis controlled later rounds landing shots to the body and head of Jesus Chavez who suffered a hairline cut in round four by an accidental clash of heads. With Chavez taking more and more punches at the end of round seven his corner stopped the fight saying he could no longer continue.

Katsidis defeated Vicente Escobedo (21-2-0, 13 KOs) by 12-round split decision capturing the interim WBO lightweight title on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout took place on the televised portion of the HBO PPV undercard featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Juan Manuel Marquez. Scores were 118-110 and 116-112 for Katsidis and 116-112 for Escobedo.

Interim WBO lightweight title holder Michael Katsidis beat previously unbeaten Kevin Mitchell (31-1-0, 23 KOs) of the UK by 3rd round TKO on Saturday, May 15, 2010 at Upton Park in West Ham, London. Katsidis rocked Mitchell then followed up with a furious barrage prompting referee Dave Perris to call a halt to the bout at 1:57 of round three.

Katsidis in a hard fought fight lost by 9th round TKO to Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-1, 38 KOs) in a WBA Super World lightweight and WBO lightweight title fight on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Katsidis put Marquez on the canvas in round three with a left hook but Marquez beat the count. Katsidis pressured Marquez and stayed in his chest forcing Marquez to fight in a phone booth. In the final round Marquez caught Katsidis with an uppercut which wobbled him. With Katsidis still on his feet and in the fight referee Kenny Bayless stepped in and stopped the contest. Stoppage seemed premature as Katsidis is known for overcoming adversity in the ring. The scorecards at the time of stoppage had Katsidis down but not by much, 74-78, 74-77 and 75-76. He deserved a chance at seeing it through.

Michael Katsidis lost by 12-round unanimous decision to former featherweight and super featherweight champion Robert Guerrero (29-1-1, 18 KOs) in an interim WBA World and WBO lightweight title fight on the undercard of Erik Morales vs Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Scores were 106-118, 107-118 and 108-117. It wasn't a good night for Katsidis. First he didn't get credit for a knockdown in round one, then he lost two points for low blows in round eight. Add that to his inability to get inside of Guerrero's long reach or avoid Guerrero's accurate punches made for a losing battle.

On Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia, Katsidis defeated Mexican Michael Lozada (38-9-1, 30 KOs) by 3rd round KO in a light welterweight fight . It looked like it might have been an earlier night of it when Katsidis unloaded on Lozada in round one, landed a big right, and dropped him in round two (but the referee ruled it a slip). The end finally came at 2:18 seconds of round three when Katsidis dropped Lozada for the count.
