Luis Collazo
Luis Collazo actually won the WBA welterweight title in April 2005 by a 12-round split decision over the then defending champion Jose Antonio Rivera. The WBA had created a new category called Super Champion reserved for boxers who held titles recongized by the WBA from the WBC, IBF and WBO. So Collazo was not considered the definitive champion since Cory Spinks had been elevated to Super Champion status. Spinks lost to Zab Judah who lost to Carlos Manuel Baldomir who had not paid the WBA sanctioning fees so in January 2006 Collazo became recognized as the sole WBA welterweight champion.
Collazo lost his WBA title to Ricky Hatton by a 12-round unanimous decision in May 2006 in a fight that many fans felt was a questionable decision. It was a hard fought fight. Collazo was dropped in the 1st round by a left hook to the jaw and again in the 2nd round but that was ruled as a slip. Collazo suffered a deep scalp cut in the 3rd round which turned him into a bloody mess throughout the bout. Both fighters traded serious leather throughout the later rounds. Upon hearing the decision Collazo proclaimed he wanted a rematch. Collazo demonstrated that he belonged among the top fighters by giving Hatton his toughest fight yet.
Collazo lost an interim WBC welterweight title bout to Shane Mosley by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the bout Collazo apparently torn ligaments and fractured the thumb of his left hand which required subsequent surgery. Previous to his fight with Mosley, Collazo won a close fight with Artur Atadzhanov on November 4, 2006.
On Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California fighting on the Mosley-Mayorga undercard Collazo beat game southpaw Russell Jordan (15-6-0, 10 KOs) by 8th round TKO . Collazo was coming off a wide 10-round unanimous decision win over Edvan Dos Santos Barros on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York on the Trinidad-Jones undercard.
Collazo lost to WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (24-0-0, 19 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Beau Rivage in Biloxi, Mississippi. Scores were 113-114, 113-114 and 111-116. Collazo got off to a good start rocking Berto in round one and getting him with some good shots in round two. Collazo rallied in rounds nine and ten throwing over 100 punches a round but Berto closed the fight strong.
On Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Radisson Hotel in Columbia, South Carolina, Collazo in a supposed tune up bout beat journeyman David Gogichaishvili (9-17-0, 4 KOs) by 6th round TKO. Collazo had knocked Gogichaishvili down once in round two and twice in round three before the referee stopped the fight on advice of the ringside doctor.
