Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is the son of legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez. He made his pro boxing debut at the age of 17 years old in 2003. He is currently undefeated in twenty-six fights, with twenty wins coming by way of knockout. He has fought most of his fights as a super lightweight and is now moving up to fight as a welterweight at 147 pounds.
Chavez Jr won the vacant WBC world youth junior middleweight title on August 19, 2006 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas on the Legacies of Legends card where he fought 145 pound Jermaine White.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat Shad Howard on September 23, 2006 in a fight on the undercard of the Jorge Arce vs Masibulele Makepula fight. Howard failed to come out of his corner for the 4th round.
JC Jr fought his first 10-round fight on December 16, 2006 in Culiacan, Mexico winning by a 10 round UD. Solano was down in round eight.
On March 9, 2007 Chavez Jr fought Raul Munoz beating him by a 3rd round TKO followed by another victory against Anthony Shuler in April in a fight on the Manny Pacquiao undercard.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr avenged his father's final loss by knocking out Grover Wiley in the 3rd round in a bout on the undercard of the Cotto-Judah fight on June 9, 2007 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Chavez Jr's wins keep piling up as his level of opposition gradually increases.
Chavez Jr beat "Downtown" Louis Brown by a 5th round TKO in a fight on the Diaz-Morales undercard on August 4, 2007 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Chavez Jr dominating the fight knocked Brown down in round four prior to the 5th round stoppage by referee Gerald Scott. Brown is probably the best opponent Chavez Jr has fought so far.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat challenger Italian Tobias Giuseppe Loriga (24-1-1, 6 KOs) by 9th round KO at Plaza de Toros Juriquilla in Queretaro, Mexico on Saturday, April 26th. JC Jr floored Loriga in the 2nd round and in the 9th round Loriga took a knee and the referee counted him out.
On Saturday, February 9, 2008 in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico the son of legendary boxer Julio Cesar Chavez forced Jose Celaya whose right eye was swollen shut to quit in round eight. In addition to his TKO victory Julio Cesar Chavez Jr picked up the vacant WBC Continental Americas light middleweight belt.
Chavez Jr was coming off a win over boxer/puncher Ray Sanchez by a 6th round knockout at Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, New Mexico on December 1, 2007. It was not only JC Jr's biggest knockout of his career but also his best performance overall. The kid showed he was not just a namesake. He fought with a lot of heart, proved he has a good chin and any questions about his boxing skills were answered.
On Saturday, July 12, 2008 at the Palenque De La Expo in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat Matt Vanda (38-7-0, 21 KOs) from Saint Paul, Minnesota by a 10-round split decision. JC Jr was in control the first half of the fight but Vanda came on strong the second half and the two went toe to toe in an all out war. Scores 100-90 and 97-93 for Chavez and 96-95 for Vanda smelling slightly of hometown decision. Mexican fans booed the decision and threw beer cans into the ring when it was announced that one judge gave every round to Chavez after seeing Vanda take three of the last four rounds. The card was televised free on TV Azteca.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat Matt Vanda (39-8-0, 22 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision in their rematch on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chavez vs Vanda II was held after their first fight ended in a controversial split decision win for Chavez. This time Chavez dominated Vanda winning the bout much more convincingly. Scores were 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 for Chavez.
On Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Plaza de Toros in Tijuana, Mexico, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr beat previously undefeated Luciano Leonel Cuello (23-1-0, 10 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision . Scores were 98-92, 96-95 and 96-94. Chavez broke Cuello's nose early in the fight. It was one of Chavez's toughest fights in which he also took home the WBC Continental Americas and WBC Latino Light Middleweight Titles.
Chavez Jr beat Jason LeHoullier (21-2-1, 8 KOs) by 1st round TKO on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at El Palenque de la Feria in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. Chavez Jr sent LeHoullier to the canvas with a left hook. It was Chavez's first defense of his WBC Latino light middleweight title.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr defeated Troy Rowland (25-3-0, 7 KOs) of Michigan by 10-round unanimous decision in a blah bout as a co-feature on the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight card on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Scores were 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93. Upon testing positive for an illegal substance, a banned diuretic named furosemide, the original result changed to no-contest. Chavez Jr was subsequently suspended for 7 months and fined $10,000 by the Nevada Boxing Commission.
Chavez Jr in the best performance of his career remained unbeaten winning a 12-round unanimous decision over John Duddy (29-2-0, 18 KOs) on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Scores were 120-108, 117-111 and 116-112. In addition to his victory Chavez Jr won the vacant WBC Silver middleweight title. Chavez Jr vs Duddy headlined the Latin Fury 15 fight card promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
Chavez beat journeyman Billy Lyell (22-9-0, 4 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision in a WBC Silver middleweight title fight on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Estadio Banorte in Culiacan, Mexico. The win puts Chavez in line for a title fight against WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik who was handed the title after the WBC stripped Sergio Martinez of it in January 2011 because he choose to fight WBO light middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk on HBO.
On Saturday, June 4, 2011 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr defeated Sebastian Zbik (30-1-0, 10 KOs) of Germany by 12-round majority decision in a WBC middleweight title fight. Scores were 114-114, 116-112 and 115-113. In addition to his victory Chavez Jr won the WBC middleweight title that was given to interim title holder Sebastian Zbik after Sergio Gabriel Martinez the lineal champion was stripped of it. Although Zbik was the busier fighter Chavez Jr landed the harder punches, left hooks to the body, overhand rights and left right combinations to the head. By winning the 12th round Chavez Jr won the fight.
Chavez Jr looking strong defeated Peter Manfredo Jr (37-7-0, 20 KOs) by 5th round TKO in a WBC middleweight title fight on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. Under Freddy Roach, Chavez Jr can not only fight but he can box now too. In one of his best performances to date Chavez Jr dominated Manfredo hurting him in round five with a big right hand then followed up by pumelling him up against the ropes with punch after unanswered punch until the referee jumped in and waved off the fight to save Manfredo from further abuse. Punch stats showed Chavez Jr landed 52% of his power punches. The kid has definately proved himself to be one helluva good fighter!
Chavez Jr defeated Mexican Marco Antonio Rubio (53-6-1, 46 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Scores were 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113. In addition to his victory Chavez successfully defended his WBC middleweight title for the second time. Rubio did well in round one but by round three Chavez always known as a slow starter started coming on strong imposing himself on Rubio bullying him with his size and strength, pressuring him, smothering his punches and attacking his body. Despite having trouble making weight on Friday and feeling the effects of it Chavez had a late surge of energy in the championship rounds and unloaded on Rubio turning the fight into a slugfest. Throughout the fight Chavez landed the harder punches. Punch stats revealed Chavez landed 49% of his power punches vs Rubio's 24%.
