Jose Luis "El Temible" Castillo
Jose Luis Castillo, underdog challenger scored a 12 round majority decision over Stevie Johnston to capture the WBC lightweight title on June 17, 2000 at the Bicycle Club in Bell Gardens, California. The fight was named Ring Magazine Upset of the Year. Castillo met Johnston for a second time on September 15, 2000 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Johnston was initially declared the winner by majority decision but minutes later it was discovered that Judge Ken Morita's scorecard had been added incorrectly. Originally Morita had 115-114 for Johnston when it should have read 114-114 making the fight a draw allowing Castillo to retain his title. Johnston showed up at Castillo's dressing room to give back the belt. (Judge Ken Morita does it again in Marco Antonio Barrera vs Rocky Juarez I. In that fight Morita also added the scores incorrectly. Originally he had it a 114-114 draw but when added correctly the scorecard was actually 115-114 for Barrera giving him the split decision victory.)
On May 7, 2005 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Diego Corrales beat Jose Luis Castillo by a 10th round TKO. That fight, Diego Corrales vs Jose Luis Castillo I was named Ring Magazine Fight of the Year. It is already considered a boxing classic. Corrales was down twice in the 10th round spitting his mouth piece out both times which resulted in a point deduction the second time. As Castillo moved in to finish Corrales off, Diego Corrales landed a big left hook that staggered Castillo and quickly followed it up with a combination of hard punches that caused referee Tony Weeks to stop the fight. Both fighters suffered a tremendous amount of punishment in that fight.
In Jose Luis Castillo vs Diego Corrales II on October 8, 2005 at the Thomas & Mack in Las Vegas, Castillo beat Corrales by a 4th round. Castillo failed to make weight and his doctor was fined and suspended for putting his foot under the scale so Castillo wouldn't weight as much. Corrales promoter Gary Shaw agreed to let the fight go on despite Castillo missing the contractual weight limit of 135, by a remarkable 3 1/2 pounds.
Later Shaw stated that he would never do that again. That if a contract calls for 135 pounds it will be at 135 pounds. Shaw stuck to his word. Corrales vs Castillo III scheduled for June 3, 2006 was cancelled. Castillo came in weighing 139 1/2 pounds when his contractual weight was no higher than 135. The Nevada Athletic Commission suspended Castillo for the rest of 2006, fined him $250,000 and also Castillo is not allowed to sign for any fight below 140 pounds.
Castillo made weight and went on to win a 12-round split decision over Cameroonian Herman Ngoudjo in a WBC light welterweight title eliminator bout on January 20, 2007 at the Paris Las Vegas as a co-main event on Urango-Hatton card.
On Saturday, June 23, 2008 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Jose Luis Castillo got nailed with a perfect liver shot from Ricky Hatton. Castillo on his knee was counted out at 2:16 of round 4 in front of 13,044 boxing fans.
Castillo said, He got me real good. It was a perfect shot. I could not breathe. I could not get up. It was a legal punch. It was the kind of punch that I delivered for years. This time I got it back.
Since losing to Hatton, Castillo fought in Mexicali on October 27, 2007 beating over matched opponent Adan Casillas by 6th round TKO. Castillas' last four opponents before fighting Castillo had lost a total of 28 fights out of 42.

Scores were 92-98, 91-99 and 91-99 all in the favor of the busier Lujan who threw over 1200 punches.
Castillo returned to the ring Saturday, January 17, 2009 at the Palenque del FEX in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico where he fought and beat James Wayka (16-8-0, 8 KOs) of Minnesota by 2nd round knockout. Castillo plans to fight on in an attempt to win a title at welterweight.
