Joey Gilbert lost to Jesse Brinkley (32-5-0, 21 KOs) in a 12-round WBC USNBC Super Middleweight Title fight on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at the Reno Events Center in Reno, Nevada. The judge's scores were 120-107, 120-107 and 119-108. Gilbert who was on his bicycle for most of the fight was knocked down for the first time in his boxing career in round five suffering a broken nose.
Gilbert was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for one year for positive drug and steroid tests after his win over Charles Howe on September 21, 2007. As a result of the failed drug tests Gilbert's 1st round TKO of Howe was later changed to no decision.

Joey Gilbert
Joey Gilbert, former three time NCAA national boxing champion and super middleweight Nevada Golden Gloves championship is trained by Dan Birmingham, one of Ring Magazine's Top 10 trainers. Gilbert recently signed on with promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing.
Gilbert was one of The Contenders boxing reality show first one boxers. On Septmeber 7, 2004 in The Contender first round boxing match Joey Gilbert beat Jimmy Lange in a 5 round unanimous decision. On September 18, 2004 in The Contender quarter finals, Peter Manfredo Jr beat Joey Gilbert by a 5th round technical decision. The fight was stopped by the ringside physician when Joey Gilbert suffered a deep cut from an accidental headbutt.
On August 5, 2006 in front of a sold out crowd at the Montbleu Resort in Stateline, Nevada Joey Gilbert beat Jason Aaker by a 1st round KO. The card also included the Marquez brothers.
Gilbert dominated middleweight Keith Sims during their bout on October 11, 2006 at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. Gilbert won the fight by a 6th round TKO earning the NABO middleweight title.
On March 2, 2007 at the MontBleu in Stateline, Nevada former Contender fighter Joey Gilbert beat Michi Munoz by 12-round unanimous decision. It was Gilbert's second WBO NABO Middleweight title defense. Gilbert had previously stopped Keith Simms in the 6th round by TKO in his first title defense.
