Jermain Taylor defeated Jessie Nicklow (22-3-3, 8 KOs) by 8th round TKO in a middleweight fight on Friday, December 30, 2011 at the Morongo Casino Resort in Cabazon, California. Returning to the ring after a 26-month layoff Taylor fighting at 161 lbs landed 40% of his jabs and 73% of his power shots on a very game Nicklow. Taylor suffered a point deduction at the end of round 6th when he got frustrated with Nicklow hit in the face after the bell. In round eight Taylor hit Nicklow with a left right combination to the head followed by two left hooks to the head which prompted the referee to jump in and wave off the fight at 0:36 albeit premature and much to Nicklow's chagrin.

Jermain Taylor is presently trained by the legendary Emmanuel Steward of Kronk Gym and HBO commentator. Taylor's most notable fight was his 12 round split decision win over Bernard Hopkins on July 16, 2005 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Taylor ended Hopkins twenty straight title defense winning streak. In a rematch on December 3, 2005 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas again Taylors faster hands, and quicker reflexes won him the fight over Bernard Hopkins but this time it was by a unanimous decision.
Taylor's fight on June 17, 2006 at FedEx Forum in Memphis with Winky Wright ended in a 12-round draw. By the end of the fight Taylor's left eye swollen to a slit by Wright's right jabs. It was such a close fight had Wright done more in the 12th round he would have won the fight.
Taylor previously didn't deliver the knockout he had promised but he did beat Kassim Ouma by a 12-round unanimous decision in front of hometown fans in Little Rock, Arkansas on December 9, 2006 retaining his middleweight world championship. Taylor backing away, throwing punches in bursts, locking up and clinching Ouma did slow down the fast pace punching Kassim Ouma is known for but it didn't stop Ouma from forcing Taylor to go twelve hard rounds.
On May 19, 2007, in Memphis, Tennessee, Taylor successfully defended his WBC and WBO middleweight titles beating challenger Cory Spinks by a 12-round split-decision. Spinks was too quick and elusive for Taylor to get a knockout win. Taylor's trainer Emanuel Steward and promoter Lou DiBella were screaming at Taylor to blast Spinks with punches and to press the action but that never happened. Taylor blammed it on Spinks running.
Taylor suffered his first career loss at the hands off hard punching Kelly Pavlik on September 29, 2007 at Broadwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Pavlik, who had just won an all action bout against Edison Miranda ended Taylor's long reign as middleweight champion by knocking him out in the 7th round. Taylor up against the ropes in the corner badly hurt after being hit by a straight right to the chin sunk to the floor as Pavlik continued his onslaught nailing Taylor with a nerve short circuiting left and right uppercut and a volley of lefts and rights. Referee Steve Smoger stepped in to stop the fight at 2:14 of round seven without a count as Taylor, unconscious slumped on the canvas. As Michael Buffer said Somebody's O Has Gotta Go
and it was Taylor's who went dropping him to 27-1-1.
Jermain Taylor lost to Kelly Pavlik by a 12-round unanimous decision in their rematch on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Taylor had exercised his contractual option for an immediate rematch after losing to Kelly Pavlik on September 29, 2007 via a dramatic 7th round knockout.
With two losses behind him Taylor beat Jeff Lacy (24-2-0, 17 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee. The bout started to look reminiscent of the whooping Calzaghe gave Lacy when Taylor had Lacy hurt in the end of round three but Lacy came back to win rounds five and maybe six. Scores in the WBC Super Middleweight Title eliminator bout were 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110.
Taylor lost to WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (25-0-0, 20 KOs) by 12th round TKO on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at The MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Froch was down in round three but beat the count. In round eleven both fighters landed heavy bombs and appeared to hurt each other. In round twelve Froch landed a heavy right which put Taylor down in the corner. Taylor beat the count but it was obvious he was hurt and Froch landed punch after punch on defenseless Taylor until the referee had seen enough and stopped the bout at 2:46.
On Saturday, October 17, 2009 at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany in Group Stage 1 of Showtime's Super Six World Boxing Classic Jermain Taylor lost to Arthur Abraham (31-0-0, 25 KOs) by 12th round KO. With only seconds to go in the twelfth round Abraham landed a straight right to Taylor's face knocking him out flat on his back on the canvas. Another 12th round knockout for Taylor reminiscent of his previous fight with Carl Froch. Taylor was hospitalized in Germany with a severe concussion and short term memory loss after his knockout by Abraham and subsequently withdrew from the Super Six due to health concerns.
