Jeff "Left Hook" Lacy
Jeff Lacy was beaten by Joe Calzaghe on March 4, 2006 in Manchester, England by 12-round unanimous decision. Jeff Lacy will never be the same fighter again after the one sided beating Calzaghe gave him. Lacy has a heavy right hand as well as the big left hook but Calzaghe fought a flawless fight against him. Calzaghe started fast, plastering Lacy with punches from all angles giving Lacy a master boxing lesson he will never forget. Now, Jeff Lacy is saying he wants a rematch. Calzaghe asked "Is this guy crazy or is he still concussed?".
Lacy fought Ukrainian Vitali Tsypko at St Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida on December 2, 2006 and got a 10-round majority decision, albeit a controversial decision. One judge had the fight even 95-95. Two judges both Florida natives scored the bout 96-94 for Lacy. The fight was close but had a hometown decision ring to it. This was Jeff Lacy's first fight since his devastating loss to Joe Calzaghe back in March and an unimpressive one as he was frequently caught by Tsypko's powerful lefts. Lacy had previously fought the Vitali Tsypko in 2004 in Joplin, MO. That fight ended in a no contest due to a cut Tsypko suffered caused by a headbutt.
Jeff Lacy came back after a year's absence from the ring due to shoulder surgery to fight Peter Manfredo Jr on the undercard of Mayweather vs Hatton in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand on Saturday, December 8, 2007. Lacy beat Manfredo Jr (28-5-0, 13 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision. Manfredo was down in round four. The scores were 97-92, 96-93 and 95-94.
Lacy vs Mendoza - Rounds 7 & 8
Lacy won a controversial 10-round majority decision over journeyman Epifanio Mendoza (28-6-1, 24 KOs) on July 23, 2008 on ESPN2 Wednesday Night Fights at Morongo Casino in Cabazon, California. The crowd booed the decision. The judges scores were 95-95, 96-94 and 97-93. Teddy Atlas had the fight 95-95. Mendoza had not fought since his knockout loss to Chad Dawson in September 2007 but he hurt Lacy in rounds 2, 6, 8 and 9. In the 2nd round Mendoza hurt Lacy bad and almost knocked him out. In the 6th round Mendoza hit Lacy so hard it knocked Lacy's mouth piece out. In the 8th round Mendoza hurt Lacy bad again and Lacy purposefully tackled Mendoza to the canvas to buy time to recover.
On Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Vanderbilt University Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee, Lacy lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Jermain Taylor (28-2-1, 17 KOs). In the WBC super middleweight title eliminator fight Lacy was hurt in round three but managed to came back and win rounds five and six but Taylor dominated the rest of the rounds.
