James Kirkland defeated Alfredo Angulo (20-2-0, 17 KO) by TKO at 2:01 of round six in a WBC Continental Americas light middleweight title fight on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Centro de Cancun in Cancun, Mexico. Thirty seconds into round one Angulo knocked down Kirkland with a right hand reminiscent of the Ishida fight. Kirkland beat the count and Angulo went after him to finish him off but ended up punching himself out and being knocked down by Kirkland at the end of the round. After that it was back and forth trading round after round with Kirkland looking the stronger of the two and Angulo looking like he didn't have much left in the tank. In round six Kirkland had backed Angulo up against the ropes and was hitting him with a combination of punches as Angulo was becoming increasingly defenseless prompting the referee to jump in and wave off the fight.

Next up for Kirkland is a 12-round light middleweight fight against Mexican Carlos "King" Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs) on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Reliant Arena in Houston, Texas. Molina is coming off a lopsided unanimous decision win over Kermit Cintron in July 2011. Kirkland has established himself again as top 154 lb contender after his win over Angulo. Note: The fight card was originally scheduled for January 28th but Erik Morales who is headlining the card in a fight against Danny Garcia had emergency gallbladder surgery and needed time to recover. All tickets for the January 28th date will be honored for the new March 24th date.

Ishida, a light puncher was supposed to be cannon foder, but instead he knocked down Kirkland three times in one round. The first knockdown came 20 seconds into the fight from a short left hand to the chin. Ishida's left and right hands continued to find home on Kirkland's chin knocking him down two more times prompting referee Joe Cortez to stop the fight. Kirkland denied being hurt saying that they were only flash knockdowns but it was obvious that they were real knockdowns and that he was shaken by them and never fully recovered his composure from the first knockdown. Kirkland has no defense now add a suspect chin to that.
