The fight was stopped prematurely because Soto slipped on a wet spot on the canvas hurting his leg and was unable to continue. Scores at the time of stoppage were 100-88, 99-89 and 99-89. Soto retained his WBC lightweight title.

Humberto Soto, the underdog beat the undefeated Rocky Juarez by a 12-round unanimous decision on August 20, 2005 winning the interim WBC featherweight title. Soto, who outworked Juarez the whole bout was a late replacement for injured In Jin Chi taking the fight on only two weeks notice.

On June 9, 2007 at the Madison Square Garden in New York on the Cotto-Judah undercard relentless Humberto Soto knocked out Bobby Pacquiao in the 7th round with a counter right hand to the jaw followed by a left hook to the liver. Pacquiao collasped in the corner on his hands and knees and was unable to get up. Pacquiao's brother Manny cried and vowed that he will defeat Soto if they were to meet to avenge his brother's loss.

Humberto Soto took the fight to Joan Guzman but lost the bout on November 17, 2007 by 12-round unanimous decision at the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The quick punching evasive Guzman, trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr took flight to make it difficult for Soto to hit him. Soto, the hardest hitting Mexican fighter and long time sparring partner for Erik Morales hadn't lost a fight since 2002. Others ringside saw the Guzman-Soto fight different. Press row scored the bout a 114-114 draw. Harold Lederman saw it 115-113 Guzman. The judges scored the bout 110-118, 111-117 and 111-117 for Guzman. Soto felt he did enough to win saying You win fights by throwing punches and not by running all night.

Soto lost his fight which was for the interim WBC super featherweight title to Francisco Lorenzo (33-4-0, 14 KOs) by 4th round disqualification on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. Referee Joe Cortez disqualified Soto for allegdedly hitting Lorenzo on the back of the head when Lorenzo took a knee. The decision was controversial. The Nevada State Athletic Commission ruled it a win for Lorenzo and WBC officials declared it a no contest refusing to award the interim title to Lorenzo. The WBC also fined Lorenzo $2,000 for faking being injured by a graze and ordered a rematch between Humberto Soto and Francisco Lorenzo to take place in December.

On Saturday, October 11, 2008 at the Auditorio Centenario in Torreon, Mexico, Humberto Soto beat Gamaliel Diaz (23-8-2, 10 KOs) by 10th round TKO. Diaz was down in round one, lost two points for holding and his corner threw in the towel after round ten. In addition to his victory Soto won the vacant interim WBC super featherweight title.

Humberto Soto beat Francisco Lorenzo (33-5-0, 14 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at Parque Andres Quintana Roo in Cozumel, Mexico capturing the vacant WBC super featherweight title. Scores were 118-108, 117-109 and 117-109. Although Soto didn't get the KO he wanted it was a measure of revenge for Lorenzo's faking injury and getting Soto disqualified in their last fight.

On Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the Plaza de Toros in Tijuana, Mexico, Humberto Soto fighting on the Chavez Jr vs Cuello card beat challenger Antonio Davis (26-5-0, 13 KOs) by 4th round TKO. Soto dropped Davis two times in rounds one and four before the referee stopped the fight at 2:38. It was Soto's first WBC super featherweight title defense since capturing the vacant title December 2008.

Soto beat former Canadian Olympian and challenger Benoit Gaudet (20-2-0, 7 KOs) by 9th round TKO on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on the Pacquiao vs Hatton undercard. It was Soto's 2nd successful defense of the WBC super featherweight title which Manny Pacquiao vacated in 2008. Gaudet suffered a flash knockdown in round one but came back and out boxed Soto until the later rounds when he choose to slug it out with Soto. Gaudet was down again in round nine from an uppercut but beat the count only to hit with a combination that had him out on his feet forcing the referee to stop the bout at 2:25.

On Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Arena Itson in Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico, Humberto Soto beat Jesus Chavez (44-7-0, 30 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision. Chavez was down in round one. In round five Chavez threw Soto almost all the way out of the ring. The referee deducted a point from Chavez for rough housing. The two brawled throughout the fight but Soto came out ahead. The judges scores read 100-87, 100-87 and 100-87 all for Soto.

Soto beat former WBC lightweight champion David Diaz (35-3-1, 17 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Scores were 117-109, 117-109 and 115-111. Diaz was down in rounds one and twelve. In addition to his victory Soto took home the vacant WBC lightweight title. The fight took place on the undercard of Pacquiao-Clottey promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank and was televised live on HBO PPV.

Humberto Soto defeated Urbano Antillon (28-2-0, 20 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision in a WBC lightweight title fight on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The fight was an all out war. Antillon lost a point in round five for a low blow. Scores were 115-112, 114-113 and 114-113.
