Guillermo Rigondeaux defeated Rico "Suavecito" Ramos (20-1-0, 11 KOs) by KO at 1:29 of round six in a WBA World super bantamweight title fight on Friday, January 20, 2012 at the Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ramos was down from a left in round one but beat the count and Rigondeaux failed to finish him off. In round six after being warned by referee Joe Cortez for pulling Ramos' head down Rigondeaux went after Ramos hitting him with a barrage of punches which included multiple lefts, one of which was a body shot right to the liver which put Ramos down on the canvas for the count. In addition to his victory Rigondeaux captured Ramos' title in Ramos' first defense. Ramos had won the title defeating Akifumi Shimoda by 7th round KO in July 2011. Rigondeaux, now the WBA World super bantamweight title holder had previously won the interim WBA World super bantamweight title in 2010 and had successfully defended it in March 2011 defeating Willie Casey by 1st round TKO.

Guillermo "El Chacal (The Jackal)" Rigondeaux
Guillermo Rigondeaux is a former 2000 and 2004 Cuban Olympian Gold medalist, 7-time Cuban national champion and 2003 Pan-Am Games Gold medalist with an amateur boxing record of 243-4.
In 2007 Guillermo Rigondeaux made a failed attempt to defect from Cuba along with fellow teammate Erislandy Lara during the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Castro kicked him out off the Cuban National Team and did not allow him to compete in the Beijing Olympics for his desertion attempt.
In February 2009 Rigondeaux successfully escaped from Cuba via a speed boat to Miami. Now boxing out of the United States he joins former amateur Cuban boxers and defectors Yan Barthelemy, Yuriorkis Gamboa, Odlanier Solis and Erislandy Lara.
Guillermo Rigondeaux made his professional debut in the United States on Friday, May 22, 2009 beating Juan Noriega (3-3-0, 3 KOs) of Little Rock, Arkansas by 3rd round TKO at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida on ESPN Friday Night Fights.
On Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada also on ESPN Friday Night Fights Guillermo Rigondeaux beat Robert Guillen (4-3-2, 0 KOs) by 1st TKO flooring Guillen with a liver punch.
Rigondeaux's former trainer Freddie Roach said his calmness in the ring and his throwback boxing style reminds him of James Toney beat Brazilian Giovanni Andrade (60-12-0, 48 KOs) by 3rd round TKO on Friday, September 18, 2009 at the Fontainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. The fight card was promoted by Luis DeCubas and televised on ESPN2.
On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at BB King Blues Club & Grill in New York, Guillermo Rigondeaux defeated Ghanaian Lante Addy (6-5-1, 4 KOs) by 8th round unanimous decision. Scores were 80-71, 80-71 and 79-72. Rigondeaux dropped Addy with a bodyshot in round one but was forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career.
Guillermo Rigondeaux defeated Adolfo Landeros (20-13-1, 9 KOs) by 1st round KO on Friday, February 5, 2010 at the NSU Don Taft University Center in Davie, Florida. Rigondeaux known for his devastating laser beam like accurate body shots put Landeros down for the count of ten with a left to the body at 28 seconds of round one. The fight took place on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights card promoted by Luis DeCubas. Rigondeaux having grown up in poverty and hard times donated his entire purse from the fight to the Children of Haiti Fund.
Rigondeaux beat Jose Angel Beranza (33-19-2, 26 KOs) by 6th round RTD on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the Auditorio Municipal in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. Beranza, who was down twice in round four from Rigondeaux's incredible fast hands retired on his stool at the end of round six choosing not to come out for round seven.
Rigondeaux defeated Panamanian Ricardo Cordoba (37-3-2, 23 KOs) by 12-round split decision in an interim WBA World super bantamweight title fight on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Cordoba down in round four and Rigondeaux was down in round six. Scores were 117-109, 114-112 and 112-114. Rigondeaux won the fight but if he hopes to be a ticket seller he can't be content to fight like he is still in the amateurs by putting rounds in the bank then doing nothing for the rest of the fight.
Rigondeaux retained his interim WBA World super bantamweight title in the most impressive performance of his career beating previously undefeated Willie Casey (11-1-0, 7 KOs) of Ireland by 1st round TKO on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the City West Hotel in Dublin, Ireland. Rigondeaux knocked Casey down three times in round one. The first time was a flash knockdown from a left, the second time was from a big left that hurt Casey and had him on shaky legs. The third time was from a combination of punches that had Casey falling forward towards the canvas as the referee jumped in and waved off the fight.
