Golden Gloves boxing tournaments have been a stepping stone to professional boxing careers for many amateur boxers. Former National Golden Gloves champions include Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr, Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr, just to name a few.

Cradle of Champions: 80 Years of New York Daily News Golden Gloves

New York's Hometown Newspaper utilizes their archives to tell the story of the tournament through more than 150 riveting images and detailed descriptions from veteran Golden Gloves reporter Bill Farrell. Included are rare images of Patterson, Robinson, and many other boxing legends.

In 1923, sports editor Arch Ward of the Chicago Tribune conceived the idea of the newspaper sponsoring a city wide amateur boxing tournament. A miniature golden glove was awarded to each champion. That's where Golden Gloves tournament got its name.

In 1927, New York Daily News started a similar amateur boxing tournament for East Coast boxers. From 1924 to 1927 boxing was illegal in Illinois. After boxing became legal in the fall of 1927 Chicago started holding their own tournaments again. Winners of the Chicago and New York Golden Gloves tournaments then fought each other in a National Golden Gloves championship. Other newspapers got involved in the 1930s and started conducting their own intercity tournaments which lead to the expansion of regional and national Golden Glove tournaments.
