Devon Alexander Tickets

Devon Alexander is scheduled to fight Marcos Maidana (31-2-0, 28 KOs) of Argentina in a 12-round welterweight fight on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Scottrade Center in Alexander's hometown of St Louis, Missouri. Maidana is coming off a dominate KO victory over Petr Petrov in September 2011 and a close majority decision win over Eric Morales in April 2011. Alexander is coming off a controversial split decision victory over Lucas Martin Matthysse this past June which many felt was a hometown decision. In this fight Alexander has a hometown advantage, speed advantage and is a southpaw which gives orthodox fighters like Maidana problems but will that be enough to neutralize Maidana's constant pressure and punching power?

Devon "Alexander The Great" Alexander

(22-1-0, 13 KOs)

Devon Alexander had an outstanding amateur boxing career under the tutelage of Kevin Cunningham, a former police officer who founded a boxing club in the basement of an old police station. Alexander was a four-time Silver Gloves champion, three-time PAL national champion, Junior Golden Gloves and Junior Olympics national champion, 2003 and 2004 United States national champion and made it to the final round of the 2004 Olympic trials.

Southpaw Devon Alexander turned pro at the age of 17 years old beating Vincent Torres (0-3-0, 0 KOs) by 1st round TKO on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at the Kewadin Casino in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan.

On Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York, Devon Alexander beat former WBO junior welterweight champion DeMarcus 'Chop Chop' Corley by 12-round unanimous decision and captured the vacant WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title. It was the 4th straight loss in a row for Corley who is on the downside of his career.

Devon Alexander defeated Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KOs) by 8th round RTD and captured the vacant WBC light welterweight title on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California. Witter quit on his stool after the 8th round claiming that he had injured his left hand. Scores at the time of stoppage were 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73 all for Alexander.

Alexander vs Urango

On Saturday, March 6, 2010 in a title unification fight at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, Devon Alexander beat Juan Urango (22-3-1, 17 KOs) by 8th round TKO. In round eight Alexander dropped Urango with an uppercut but Urango beat the count. The round resumed and Alexander continued his attack dropping Urango for a second time. Urango beat the count again but the referee stopped the bout at 1:12. It was Urango's first loss by KO. Alexander retained his WBC light welterweight title and captured Urango's IBF light welterweight title.

Devon Alexander retained his IBF & WBC light welterweight titles in a hard fought fight beating Ukrainian Andriy Kotelnik (31-4-1, 13 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri. Scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. Former Ukrainian Olympic Silver Medalist and light welterweight champion Kotelnik felt Alexander got a hometown decision and that if the fight had been held anywhere but in Saint Louis the belts would have been his as did most hardcore boxing fans. Although Alexander was the busier figher Kotelnik landed with more accuracy. Compubox stats revealed that Kotelnik landed 29% (225/763) of his punches whereas Alexander only landed 19% (202/1113). Styles make fights and apparently the judges preferred the busier fighter to the more accurate fighter who was also landing the harder more damaging punches.

Devon Alexander lost by 10th round technical decision to Timothy Bradley (27-0-0, 11 KOs) in a WBC/WBO light welterweight unification match at the Silverdome (formerly the Pontiac Silverdome) in Pontiac, Michigan on Saturday, January 29, 2011. The fight was marred by Bradley accidentally headbutting Alexander multiple times. In round three Alexander suffered a cut over his right eye from a headbutt. This was preceded by more headbutts. Then in round ten Alexander suffered a headbutt to his left eye. Alexander told the ring doctor that his eyes were burning and he could not see prompting the ring doctor to stop the fight. Scores were 95-96, 93-97 and 93-98 at the time of stoppage. Alexander suffered his first defeat and also lost his WBC light welterweight title.

Devon Alexander got a hometown decision winning by 10-round split decision over Lucas Martin Matthysse (28-2-0, 26 KOs) on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Family Arena in St Charles, Missouri. Scores were 96-93 and 95-94 for Alexander and 96-93 for Matthysse. In round four Alexander was sent to the canvas for the first time in his pro career by a Matthysse right hand right down the pipe. Round seven was a big round for Matthysse who tattooed Alexander with body shots. In round eight Alexander was in retreat mode. Matthysse was breaking him down. Alexander had a little better round in the 9th. But in the 10th Alexander got outworked by Matthysse who landed the bigger shots. Punch stats revealed that both Alexander and Matthysse landed at 21% but Alexander's punches were shoe shin compared to Matthysse's hard punches.
