Cory Spinks defeated Sechew Powell (26-4-0, 15 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York by 12-round unanimous decision in an IBF junior middleweight eliminator fight on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Shrine Mosque in Springfield, Missouri. Scores were 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 for Spinks who controlled the fight with his jab. Spinks previously held the IBF junior middleweight title from July 2006 to March 2008 losing it to Verno Phillips and from April 2009 to August 2010 losing it to Cornelius Bundrage. Now Spinks will get the opportunity to fight Cornelius Bundrage again in hopes of winning the IBF title back.

Cory "Next Generation" Spinks
Cory Spinks won the Ring magazine welterweight championship of the world December 13, 2003 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City when he beat Ricardo Mayorga by 12 round majority decision. In his first defense of his title, on April 10, 2004 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas Spinks beat Zab Judah by a 12 unanimous decision retaining his IBF, WBA & WBC Welterweight titles.
On February 5, 2005 at Savvis Center in St Louis Cory Spinks met Judah again. This time Zab Judah beat Cory Spinks by a 9th round TKO becoming the undisputed welterweight champion. Spinks didn't fight again for another 17 months. When he returned to the ring he fought Roman Karmazin winning a controversial 12-round majority decision. Many thought the fight should have resulted in a draw.
Spinks in his previous uneventful fight outboxed mandatory challenger Rodney Jones on February 3, 2007 winning a 12-round unanimous decision. Spinks retains his IBF light middleweight title that he captured from Roman Karmazin in a hometown decision on July 8, 2006.
Cory Spinks lost to middleweight Jermain Taylor by a 12-round split decision at the FedEx Forum in Memphis on Saturday, May 19, 2007 in a lackluster bout. Spinks spent the majority of that fight running away from Taylor while Taylor looked for the knockout punch. Although Spinks threw more punches than Taylor he only connected on 16 percent.
On Thursday, March 27, 2008 at the Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri Cory Spinks lost in an upset bout to veteran Verno Phillips by a 12-round split decision. Scores were 112-116, 113-115 and 115-113. Spinks with his good defense and speed outboxed Phillips the entire fight. Phillips was the aggressor, landed the harder punches and had a good 7th round but very saw him the winner. Phillips on a four fight winning streak since losing to Ike Quartey and Kassim Ouma took home the IBF light middleweight title.
Cory Spinks beat challenger Deandre Latimore (19-2-0, 16 KOs) by split decision in a 12-round IBF light middleweight title fight against on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Scottrade Center in St Louis, Missouri. Scores were 115-112 and 114-113 for Sprinks and 115-112 for Latimore. Spinks was knocked down in round one but was up quickly. Uncharacteristically Spinks fought aggressively on the inside taking away much of Latimore's fire power. Both fighters suffered a cut over their left eye during the bout from clashes of heads. By later rounds Spinks was schooling Latimore. In round twelve Latimore was down but the referee ruled it a slip. In addition to his victory Spinks won the IBF light middleweight title that had been vacated by Verno Phillips.
On Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Scottrade Center in Saint Louis, Missouri, Cory Spinks lost by 5th round TKO in an IBF light middleweight title fight to former Contender contestant Cornelius Bundrage (30-4-0, 18 KOs). Bundrage pressured and battered Spinks for the entire fight. In round five Spinks spin out of the corner to evade Bundrage and slipped and fell through the ropes on to the ring apron. Upon resumption of the round Bundrage knocked down Spinks. At the count of nine Spinks jumped up but the referee did not liked what he saw and waved the fight off.
Spinks defeated Shakir Ashanti (16-11-0, 4 KOs) by 10-round unanimous decision in a middleweight fight on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at the Family Arena in Saint Charles, Missouri. Scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90. Spinks had not fought since losing to Cornelius Bundrage by TKO in August 2010. Having moved up in weight to 160 lbs Spinks did well dominating Ashanti.
