Brandon Rios defeated WBA lightweight champion Miguel Acosta (28-4-2, 22 KOs) of Venezuela by 10th round TKO on Saturday, February 26, 2011 at The Palms in Las Vegas, Nevada. Acosta, who was making his first WBA lightweight title defense was down in rounds six, eight and ten. Acosta's corner had the fight stopped at 1:14 of round ten with their fighter down in the corner from three Rios right hands. In addition to his victory Rios also won the WBA lightweight title and he did this with a broken right hand he suffered in round eight.
Following his memorable win over Acosta on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, Rios beat Mexican Urbano Antillon (28-3-0, 20 KOs) by 3rd round KO. Rounds one and two were fought in close with both fighters trading heavily on relatively even terms. But in round three the game changed with Antillon visiting the canvas twice. Although Antillon beat the count both times he was in trouble and on wobbly legs which prompted the referee to stop the fight at 2:39 of round three. In addition to his KO victory it was also Rios' first defense of his WBA lightweight title.
Rios defeated John Murray (31-2-0, 18 KOs) of Manchester, England by TKO at 2:06 of round eleven in a WBA lightweight title fight on the undercard of Cotto vs Margarito II on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York. The fight was supposed to be Rios's second defense of his WBA lightweight title that he won by beating Miguel Acosta in February 2011 but Rios lost the title on the scales after failing to make weight and was additionally fined $20,000. Rios and Murray fought in close in a phone booth with Rios landing good left and right uppercuts right up in between Murray's gloves. By round six both of Murray's eyes were black and blue and swollen and blood was running profusely from his nose. Murray put up a good fight but in the 11th round the referee had seen enough and stopped the fight. Rios plans to move up in weight to fight at 140 lbs.
