Bernard Hopkins lost by 2nd round TKO to Chad Dawson in a WBC light heavyweight title fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, October 15, 2011 on HBO PPV. After missing with a right hand Hopkins ended up into a clinch on top of Dawson's back who had ducked down. Dawson shoved Hopkins off with his shoulder and Hopkins ended up falling backwards onto the canvas and almost out of the ring. During the fall Hopkins landed on his left elbow jamming his arm up and into his acromioclavicular joint hurting his shoulder. (Post fight medical examination revealed Hopkins suffered a closed dislocation of the AC joint.) The referee had not ruled a foul so with Hopkins unable to continue due to injury lost by TKO. Of course Hopkins cried foul and plans to file a protest with the California Athletic Commission to try to get the decision changed to a no-contest. Prior to the incident the fight was a stinker. (Note: On October 20, 2011 the WBC gave Hopkins back his title after reviewing the fight video. On December 13, 2011 the California State Athletic Commission changed the TKO decision to No Contest. )

Next up for Hopkins is a WBC ordered rematch against Chad Dawson (30-1-0, 17 KOs) on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Having previously won two upsets in Atlantic City, Antonio Tarver in 2006 and Kelly Pavlik in 2008 Hopkins hopes to pull off another.
