The Aragon Ballroom built in 1926 as a dance hall is located near the corner of Broadway and Lawrence, uptown in Chicago, the birthplace of amateur boxing. Architecturely designed to emulate a Spanish courtyard, the historic Aragon has gone through a succession of owners and uses over the years. Its been a dance hall, concert hall, roller skating rink, wrestling and boxing venue.
The first fight card at the Aragon Ballroom took place on January 8, 1966. Headlining the card was hard-hitting middleweight contender Rubin "Hurricane" Carter who was convicted of triple murder three months later (charges dismissed in 1988) and Wilbert "Skeeter" McClure who later became the Massachusetts State Boxing Commissioner. »
