Antonio "Tony" Margarito

(38-6-0, 27 KOs)

Antonio Margarito is a big, strong welterweight and many potential opponents are afraid to fight him. They say he is a nobody. The truth is they know a fight with Margarito is risky since he will run them around the ring, tire them out, get them out of their rhythm and trap them in the corner where they will feel his power and size. Floyd Mayweather Jr has been offered $8 million to fight Margarito but has made every excuse in the book not to accept the offer. Now that is fear! At the WBO 2006 Adwards Antonio Margarito was recognized as the most durable and feared champion always prepared to meet the best though competitive champions do not meet his challenge.

Margarito has had some notable fights. He fought Antonio Diaz in 2002 in a vacant WBO welterweight title fight. Diaz was down in the 10th round. His corner threw in the towel. In 2003 his knocked out Andrew Lewis in the 2nd round earning the WBO welterweight title. In 2004 Margarito knocked out the undefeated Hercules Kyvelos in the 2nd round of a WBO welterweight title fight. In a WBO welterweight title bout in 2005 Margarito knocked out the undefeated Kermit Cintron in the 5th round.

In the first 20 seconds of round one Margarito hit Gomez with a right to his face that drove Gomez back into the ropes. Then Margarito nailed Gomez with another right. As Gomez attempted to counter as Margarito delivered a combination of punches including a left upper cut followed by right that sent Gomez face first on to the canvas. Crumpled on his side with his mouth piece spit out referee Richard Steele waved off the fight. At that very moment Gomez staggered to his feet protesting the stoppage. Margarito wins the bout in round one by TKO and the WBO Welterweight title.

Margarito made his 7th successful WBO welterweight title defense beating Joshua Clottey by a 12-round unanimous decision at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday, January 02, 2006. Margarito had trouble in the early rounds with Clottey's style which consisted of the Peek-a-Boo and waiting for an opening to throw a counterpunch. From the middle rounds on though Margarito controlled the fight.

Antonio Margarito lost his WBO welterweight title to Paul Williams by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California on Saturday, July 14, 2007. The 6 feet 2 inch plus tall lanky Williams, a southpaw outworked Margarito the first half of the fight throwing non-stop flickering punches from all angles to keep Margarito on the outside. Margarito blocked most of Williams pitty-pat punches as he kept moving forward like a tank to get on the inside of the long armed Williams where he could do his damage. Margarito came on strong in the last rounds of the fight landing hard thudding punches on the fading Williams cutting Williams's eye in the 11th round. But Williams's overall workrate gave him the decision in a close fight that could have easily ended in a draw or a decision for Margarito.

Margarito claimed the vacant WBO intercontinental welterweight title knocking out Golden Johnson in the 1st round at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday, November 10, 2007. The fight took place on the Mosley-Cotto undercard. Margarito came out fast just liked he said he was going to do and dropped Johnson three times before referee Wayne Kelley stopped the fight at 2:28 of round one.

On January 24, 2009 before Margarito's fight with Shane Mosley at Staples Center in Los Angeles, Naazim Richardson, Mosley's trainer objected to the way Margarito's trainer Javier Capetillo was wrapping Margarito's hands. California officials then discovered illegal pads coated with a plaster-like substance in Margarito's hand wraps. Subsequently both Margarito and Capetillo had their licenses suspended for one year although Mexico welcomed Margarito to fight during his suspension.
