Andre Berto defeated Slovenian Jan Zaveck (31-2-0, 18 KOs) of Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany by 5th round TKO in an IBF welterweight title fight on Saturday, September 3, 2011 at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi. The bout was stopped by the referee on the advice of the ring doctor at 3:00 of round five due to cuts and swelling of Zaveck's right and left eyes preventing him from being able to see. It was unfortunate because the fight was just getting interesting. Zaveck had found a way to nullify Berto's hand speed and punching power by fighting inside with his head in Berto's chest and was landing repeated uppercuts and overhand rights. Punch stats revealed the Berto was the busier fighter but landed only 25% of his punches compared to Zaveck's 41%. As usual Berto held and clinched too making it an ugly fight. In addition to Berto getting the win he captured Zaveck's IBF welterweight title. Zaveck was making his 4th defense of the title that he had held since December 2009 when he scored a 3rd round stoppage of Isaac Hlatshwayo in an upset.
