Alfonso Gomez lost by 6th round TKO to Saul Alvarez (38-0-1, 28 KOs) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in a WBC light middleweight title fight. Gomez suffered a knock down in round one but recovered and controlled the flow of the fight until the last round and a half. But an uppercut by Alvarez in round six changed the fight stunning Gomez who was now backed up against the ropes being hit by a barrage of punches which prompted the referee to jump in and stop the fight. Many thought it was a quick stoppage but Gomez was not throwing any punches back.

Alfonso Gomez, former contestant on The Contender boxing reality show series ended up ranked third out of sixteen fighters. Since The Contender series Gomez beat Luciano Perez on October 15, 2005 by 4th round TKO, draw with Jesse Feliciano on May 5, 2006 and beat Carson Jones on August 25, 2006 by 8th round TKO. In his bout with clever boxer Carson Jones, Gomez displayed his boxing skills wearing Jones down. In the final round Gomez hurt Jones with a left uppercut driving him into the ropes where he continued to unload on Jones causing the referee to stop the bout with 32 seconds left to go in round eight.

On Saturday, July 14, 2007 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in a welterweight bout Alfonso Gomez retired Arturo Gatti with a 7th round knockdown. Gomez controlled the fight from the beginning pinned Gatti on the ropes and ended the bout with a right cross square on the chin which pitched Gatti to the canvas. Gomez had just came off another 7th round stoppage over Martin Concepcion on March 30, 2007 in the UK vs US Contender Challenge.

Alfonso Gomez will be forever known as the boxer who ended Arturo Gatti's career. Gatti fell onto the canvas on his hands and knees after Gomez nailed him with right on the jaw. New Jersey boxing commissioner Larry Hazzard entered the ring signaling referee Randy Neuman to wave off the fight at 2:12 of the 7th round.

Gomez won a hard fought 10-round unanimous decision over challenger Ben Tackie on Saturday, October 16, 2007 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Tackie, who had previously gone the distance with both Kostya Tszyu and Ricky Hatton aggressively stalked Gomez and pressed the action the entire bout. Gomez won the bout purely on boxing skills as the durable banger Ben Tackie walked right thru Gomez's punches ending Gomez's streak of wins by knockout.

On Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Alfonso Gomez took a beating by WBA welterweight champion Miguel Angel Cotto . Referee Randy Neumann called a halt to the fight after round five with the overmatched and battered Gomez on his stool. The underdog Gomez was stagered in round one and down in rounds two, three and five. The fight took place on HBO's doubleheader card along with Margarito-Cintron.

Alfonso Gomez beat challenger Juan Manuel Buendia (14-3-1, 8 KOs) by 8th round TKO in a welterweight bout at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada on Friday, May 1, 2009. Both fighters were cut and bloodied by accidental headbutts in round five and six. In round eight Gomez nailed Buendia with a body shot that put Buendia down. Buendia beat the count but was unable to continue due to pain.

On Saturday, November 14, 2009 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on the Pacquiao vs Cotto undercard, Alfonso Gomez beat Mexican Jesus Soto Karass (24-4-3, 16 KOs) by 6th round technical decision. The fight was stopped due to a bad cut Gomez suffered over his right eye in round three from an accidental headbutt. Scores at the time of stoppage were 58-54, 57-55 and 57-55 all for Gomez. Soto Karass lost 2 points for low blows in round three and round four. In addition to his victory Gomez took home the vacant WBC Continental Americas welterweight title.

Alfonso Gomez defeated Jose Luis Castillo (60-10-1, 52 KOs) by 5th round TKO in a WBC Continental Americas welterweight title fight on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Castillo retired on his stool at the end of round five. After the fight 36 year old Castillo apologized to the crowd for his poor performance and said he just doesn't have it anymore and announced his intentions to retire. Gomez vs Castillo took place on the undercard of Pacquiao-Clottey promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank and aired live on HBO PPV.

Gomez beat Calvin Green (21-6-1, 13 KOs) by 2nd round TKO in a 150 lb catchweight fight on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, California. Gomez came out strong rocking Green in round one and driving him into the ropes in round two with a barrage of punches prompting the referee to stop the fight at 1:24. Neither Gomez nor Green had fought for over a year.
