Abner Mares defeated Puerto Rican Eric "Little Hands Of Steel" Morel (46-3-0, 23 KOs) of Madison, Wisconsin by 12-round unanimous decision in a WBC super bantamweight title fight on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Don Haskins Convention Center in El Paso, Texas. In a near shutout scores were 120-117, 119-109 and 119-109. Mares who moved up in weight from bantamweight to super bantamweight for the fight brought his speed and power with him. He didn't get a knockout but much of that can be attested by Morel's good chin.

On Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington, Abner Mares beat Vic Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs) by 12-round split decision in Showtime's semi-final bantamweight tournament. In addition to his victory Mares also took home Darchinyan's IBO bantamweight title. Scores were 115-111, 113-112 and 111-115. In round two Mares was down from a left. Abner Mares defeated Joseph Agbeko (28-3-0, 22 KOs) by 12-round majority decision in Showtime's bantamweight tournament finals on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Scores were 115-111, 115-111 and 113-113. Mares scored a knockdown of Agbeko with a grazing left hand in round one. Agbeko buckled Mares legs with a hard right hand in round four. There was a clash of heads that opened up a cut over Mares left eye in round six. Agbeko seized control of the fight in round eight and continued until round eleven when Mares threw a hard low blow smack in the balls of Agbeko which sent him down on his knees on the canvas in nerve jolting pain. Surprisingly the referee ruled it a knockdown, albeit it was from an illegal blow. This was not the first low blow that Mares threw either. Throughout the fight he threw dozens that went without warning and without the referee taking away points. The bottom line was the referee took the fight away from Agbeko. On Saturday, December 3, 2011 in an IBF and WBC Silver bantamweight title fight rematch at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Californi, Mares defeated Ghanian Joseph Agbeko (28-4-0, 22 KOs) by 12-round unanimous decision . Scores were 118-110, 118-110 and 118-110. The rematch took place because Mares and Agbeko's first fight was marred in controversy due to the countless number of low blows that Abner Mares threw without losing any points. The most flagrant low blow occurred in round eleven which caused Agbeko to drop to the canvas bend over in agony. To add insult to injury the referee ruled it a knockdown for Mares. The IBF ordered the rematch because of inappropriate conduct by the referee which affected the outcome of the fight. In this second fight Mares threw less low blows than in the first fight preferring kidney punches and pushing Agbeko's head down instead. In round two a left jab from Agbeko opened up a cut on Mares' on right eye which bleed throughout the fight. In round eleven Mares came out late for the bell but went on to trade wildly with Agbeko landing multiple good right hands and a couple of left hooks. Mares spent most of round twelve backpedaling except for the final 10 seconds in which he mounted an attack trying to steal the round.
